When you experience a loss in your life, it is expected that you will grieve.  Even those who say that they are alright will touch on the five stages of grief as they seek to move on and put their lives back together.

Grief is not a one-day or two-day thing.  People who say that it is are still in the first stage of it.  Do yourself a favor and be patient in your grief.  Trying to rush the process doesn’t work.  The five stages of grief are detailed below.

Denial

This is the first stage of grief.  You might think that denial is your way of coping but it is how you survive in the first few days after a loss.  Denial keeps you moving to do the hard things like plan funerals and deal with financial issues.  You may even shun the protective arms of relatives who are trying to comfort you because you are not yet ready to accept the loss.

Anger

It seems inappropriate to yell at the dead, but it is part of the grief process.  You feel hurt because this person has left you.  In a divorce, you are angry that love has died and the relationship had to end.  Many are angry at God for allowing such a thing to happen in their lives. more…

Miscarriage occurs when an unborn fetus aborts itself.  Any woman can experience a miscarriage.  If you suspect that a miscarriage has happened to you, see your obstetrician immediately.

One sign of a miscarriage is bleeding.  It can present as spotting or heavy bleeding.  Spotting doesn’t necessarily mean that you are having a miscarriage but needs to be investigated all the same.

Diagnosis

When you visit your doctor, he or she will ask what types of symptoms you have experienced.  Do your best to remember when the bleeding or cramping started and anything else that happened.  The doctor will likely perform an ultrasound.

It is the same as when you went for your visit and heard the baby’s heartbeat.  The absence of a heartbeat is a sign that the pregnancy is no longer viable.  To be sure, your hormone levels (HCG) will be monitored as well as a vaginal exam done to judge what has happened.  This can be devastating for you so bring your spouse, partner or family member with you for support.

During the manual exam, the doctor will also check your uterus.  He is looking to feel that the size of the uterus is equal to the stage of pregnancy.  All of this is done to confirm what is seen is seen and heard on ultrasound or as added measures if the ultrasound is inconclusive.

Until a definitive diagnosis is reached, your doctor may ask that you abstain from sex with your partner.  If the pregnancy is still viable but there is a problem with the placenta, you may be put on bed rest to avoid a miscarriage.

Treatment

If a miscarriage is definite, the doctor will let you know.  From there, he will see how far the miscarriage has progressed.  Early miscarriages may expel the products of conception completely.   more…

Tetanus is also called lockjaw.  It is a condition of the muscles of the body caused by the bacteria Clostridium tetani.  Paralysis begins with the jaw and progresses through the other muscles in the body.  Without treatment it can lead to death.   Immunization is a way to prevent tetanus.

When you are a child, part of the required immunization series includes a tetanus shot.  It is usually grouped in with diphtheria and pertussis shots to create one vaccine (DTP or DtaP) for all three childhood conditions.  After the series of shots is over, it is recommended that a booster be given every ten years to keep the antibodies circulating and fighting any future tetanus bacterium incidents.

Immunizations are used as preventative measures to stop the outbreak of childhood illnesses that were big at the turn of the century and earlier.  It is almost unthinkable now that kids would die of mumps, measles or other conditions that have become controlled through vaccination.  That wasn抰 always the case.

Tetanus is a little different from the other conditions in that it can still be contracted today – not just by kids but adults as well.  Whenever you get cut on a rusty nail or a piece of fencing, everyone says to go to the doctor and get a tetanus shot to keep lockjaw away.  The reason for this is not the rusty nail but the dirt that surrounds it. more…
